Title
A MOTION affirming the value of the King County citizens' elections oversight committee in maintaining public confidence in elections and affirming the council's intent to retain the services of the committee.
Body
WHEREAS, the King County council has created three citizen's elections oversight committees. The first was created in July 2003, the second was created in April 2005 and the current nonexpiring committee was created in May 2006, and
WHEREAS, the committees have submitted two lengthy reports as well as annual reports, and
WHEREAS, the committees have made in excess of one hundred eighty recommendations, nearly all of which have been implemented by King County or addressed by changes in state or federal law, and
WHEREAS, many members of the original committee have continued to serve on the second and third committees, and
WHEREAS, members of the citizens' elections oversight committees have dedicated in excess of four thousand five hundred hours of unpaid service in monthly meetings, observing elections, holding and attending public hearings, studying issues, developing recommendations and writing reports, and
WHEREAS, the proper administration of elections is an essential function of county government in Washington state, and
WHEREAS, fair and accurate elections are of the utmost importance to our democratic society, and
WHEREAS, public confidence in the election process rests on voters' convictions that the electoral process is secure, accurate and fair, and
WHEREAS, the King County citizens' elections oversight committees have made excellent recommendations that have helped to restore trust in King County's ability to conduct fair, accurate and secure elections, and
WHEREAS, the King County citizens' elections oversight committees have helped King County to significantly improve its operations by providing valuable oversight and advisory functions;
