A MOTION creating a recovery champion award to be presented annually in honor of National Recovery Month and in partnership with the King County Recovery Coalition.
Body
WHEREAS, substance use disorders affect brain function and behaviors that can cause negative outcomes for individuals, their social networks and the community, and
WHEREAS, recovery from substance use disorder is possible and supported by individuals who are recovery champions who put their energy and skills to work supporting those suffering from such disorders, and
WHEREAS, the King County Recovery Coalition's mission is advancing substance use recovery and mental health wellness by catalyzing public understanding and public policy innovation through community partnerships, and
WHEREAS, National Recovery Month is observed every September to promote and support recovery and the recovery community, and
WHEREAS, the King County council recognizes that recovery is made possible by extraordinary individuals and organizations that put in the hard work and perseverance that it takes to support people in achieving and maintaining recovery;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
A. There is hereby established the King County Recovery Champion Award, to be awarded annually by the King County council in conjunction with National Recovery Month and presented in partnership with the King County Recovery Coalition. The Recovery Champion Award should be awarded to:
1. An individual who resides in King County or is an employee of King County government and has demonstrated hard work and passion in helping those with substance use disorders; or
2. An organization located in King County that has demonstrated hard work and passion in helping with substance use disorder.
B. The person or organization receiving the award shall be known as the Recovery Champion.
C. The annual nomination and selection of the Recovery Champion will be led by the chair of the King County council and one other member of the King County council, who will be selected by the chair, between May and July and presented between August and September in conjunction with National Recovery Month. The award shall be memorialized by an appropriate token or decoration, comprised of appropriate materials
and design befitting the nature of the award, to be given to the award recipient.
D. The 2022 Recovery Champion Award is hereby presented to Brad Finegood.
