Title
A MOTION authorizing the chair of the council to enter into a contract amendment increasing the compensation to be paid for services to represent the county with the Washington state Legislature.
Body
WHEREAS, the county is a subdivision of the state of Washington, and
WHEREAS, as a result, the county's services, operations and finances are to a significant extent controlled by the laws of the state, and
WHEREAS, legislation passed by the Washington state Legislature often impacts King County's services, operations and finances, and
WHEREAS, it is in the interest of the residents of King County to have representation during the legislative session on a broad range of complex issues, and
WHEREAS, based on a competitive bidding process conducted in 2007, Michael E. Temple was selected to represent King County with state government officials, and
WHEREAS, the term of King County's contract with Michael E. Temple was extended on July 28, 2008, by Motion 12819, to include August 28, 2008, to August 29, 2009, and
WHEREAS, the King County council's government relations consultant Tom Bristow has accepted the position of interim chief of staff to the King County council, and as a result there is need for substantial additional legislative advocacy services, and
WHEREAS, as well as performing duties required by this contract prior to this amendment, Michael Temple will perform the advocacy responsibilities that would otherwise have been assigned to Mr. Bristow during the legislative session. In addition, Mr. Temple will take the primary advocacy lead on the following issues: human services; housing; public health;, criminal justice; and other duties as necessary to accomplish the King County agenda, and
WHEREAS, Mr. Temple has informed the county that the compensation requested for the additional services is an additional $4,800 per month from January 15, 2009, through June 15, 2009, payable as follows:
