A MOTION authorizing the county to accept the Innovations in American Government award and a $100,000 grant from the Ash Institute of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University to encourage other courts to emulate the King County electronic court records program and its substantial efficiencies in handling court case information.

WHEREAS, King County has a long-standing commitment to promoting efficiency and innovation in government, and
WHEREAS, the electronic court records ("ECR") program of the King County department of judicial administration (superior court clerk's office) has been renowned within the local, state and national courts community for its innovations and results, and
WHEREAS, the ECR has resulted in substantial efficiencies for King County law safety and justice departments while protecting the accurate preservation of the court case files along with protection of sealed and confidential documents, and
WHEREAS, the ECR has been honored with special recognition as a 2007 Innovation in American Government Award by the Ash Institute at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and
WHEREAS, the Innovations in American Government awards program this year reached the milestone of twenty years in existence, and has asked the department of judicial administration to promote similar practices in other courts nationwide through a grant of $100,000 for that purpose;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
King County is hereby authorized to accept an Ash Institute Innovations in American Government award for 2007, including a $100,000 grant offered to promote replication of the success of ECR at King County. The county is authorized to accept the $100,000 award from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in order to encourage other courts to adopt the model of treating the electronic version of a
