Title
A MOTION expressing support for the preservation of lands in the Middle Green River valley through the creation of a Mountains to Valley greenway.
Body
WHEREAS, the Middle Green River valley in southeast King County is endowed with rich environmental resources and remarkable scenic vistas, and
WHEREAS, the Middle Green River valley also features significant outdoor recreation resources, supporting activities including fishing, hiking, camping, mountain biking and horseback riding, and
WHEREAS, continuing pressures of population growth and development in the region can result in the loss of these natural and environmental resources if efforts are not made to protect these resources, and
WHEREAS, the Middle Green River Coalition, made up of individuals, community groups, outdoor recreation interests, regional organizations, private landowners and others, has been formed to organize efforts to retain the natural splendor and environmental qualities of the valley and its environs, and
WHEREAS, the coalition has undertaken an effort to create a Mountains to Valley greenway, extending from the upper Green River valley to Flaming Geyser State Park, to protect this important resource, and
WHEREAS, the coalition has identified specific acquisition priorities needed to complete the greenway, and
WHEREAS, the proposed greenway will contribute to preservation of necessary habitat conditions for a range of aquatic species and wildlife, including endangered salmonid species through the protection of natural lands that support cold water springs that feed into the Middle Green river, and
WHEREAS, the Middle Green River Coalition is seeking a statement of support for its preservation efforts, to complement the endorsements of many local municipalities, state agencies and natural resource interest groups;
