Title
A MOTION urging Congress to enact the Employee Free Choice Act, S. 842 or H.R 1696.
Body
      WHEREAS, in 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the National Labor Relations Act, giving private sector employees the right to form unions and bargain collectively with their employers, and
      WHEREAS, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, union workers generally earn higher pay and higher benefits than nonunion workers, and
WHEREAS, according to the 2000 Human Rights Watch Report, worker rights to form and join unions are increasingly eroded in the United States by the failure of federal labor laws to provide adequate, timely, and just remedies for violations, and
      WHEREAS, even after workers vote to have a union, delays in reaching an initial contract can deny workers the benefit of collective bargaining, and
      WHEREAS, the King County Labor Council and the King County Labor Coalition support the Employee Free Choice Act, S. 842 or H.R. 1696;
      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
      The King County council respectfully urges the United States Congress to enact the Employee Free Choice Act, S. 842 or H.R. 1696.
