A MOTION approving a feasibility study and recommendations regarding the human and civil rights commission as called for by Ordinance 19047, Section 59, as amended.

                     WHEREAS, King County has declared racism as a public health crisis, and

                     WHEREAS, King County is reinvesting revenue generated by the tax on marijuana into community instead of law enforcement, and

                     WHEREAS, the executive has appointed a chief equity and inclusion officer to advance pro-equity activities and ensure that the county's commitment to equity and social and racial justice is realized in all operations, and

                     WHEREAS, the executive is committed to making King County a welcoming a community where every person can thrive, and

                     WHEREAS, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the lives of King County residents, families, businesses and communities, and

                     WHEREAS, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disproportionately impact lives, families, and businesses of King County's Black, Indigenous and Communities of Color, exacerbating existing health, social and economic inequities, and

                     WHEREAS, Ordinance 19047, Section 59, as amended, required the executive to transmit a report on the status of the feasibility study and recommendations of establishing a human and civil rights commission the report to the council on August 14, 2020, and

                     WHEREAS, the status report was transmitted to the council on August 31, 2020, due to staffing impacts of COVID-19, and

                     WHEREAS, Ordinance 19047, Section 59, as amended, required the executive to transmit a report on the feasibility and recommendations establishing a human and civil rights commission and a motion approving the study, which is attached to this motion;

                     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:

                     The feasibility study and recommendations, as required by Ordinance 19047, Section 59, as amended, which is Attachment A to this motion, is hereby approved.
