A MOTION related to naming the new King County office building.

WHEREAS, King County will construct a new King County office building in downtown Seattle in close proximity to the King County Courthouse and adjacent to the King County Administrative Building, and
WHEREAS, the new office building will be completed in April 2007, and
WHEREAS, the new office building will house critical county functions including the Seattle-King County department of public health, the King County finance and business operations division and the King County information technology services division, and
WHEREAS, King County citizens will visit the new office building to access county services and conduct business with county officials and employees, and
WHEREAS, King County citizens and taxpayers should, whenever possible, be provided with opportunities to feel a greater sense of connection and relation with their King County government, its functions and its public facilities, and
WHEREAS, citizens of King County are paying for the construction of the new office building and should therefore have a role in the naming of that building, and
WHEREAS, the name of the office building should reflect broad citizen values as well as any one or more of county issues, persons and symbols, and
WHEREAS, young King County residents in particular should be encouraged to participate and become aware of county government activities in a manner which is engaging, respectful, creative and intriguing;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
The county sets forth a short-term public involvement process to select the name of the new King County office building.
The county will select a King County office building nomination group to lead a naming process for the new King County office building.
