A MOTION making an appointment to fill the vacancy in the position of state representative for the 30th legislative district.
Body
WHEREAS, a vacancy exists in the position of state representative for the 30th legislative district of the Washington state House of Representatives due to the untimely death of Representative Roger Freeman, who passed away on October 29, 2014, six days before the general election and nonetheless received the most votes at that general election, and
WHEREAS, the 30th legislative district is a multicounty legislative district, covering parts of King County and parts of Pierce county, and
WHEREAS, Article II, Section 15 of the Washington state Constitution provides that in the event of a vacancy occurring in a multicounty legislative district the vacancy shall be filled by joint action of the legislative authorities of the respective counties from a list of three nominees selected by the state central committee of the same political party as the legislator whose office is vacated. The nominees must be from the 30th legislative district and of the same political party as the legislator whose office is vacated, and
WHEREAS, the Washington state Democratic Central Committee has submitted the names of three constitutionally qualified nominees to fill the vacancy created by the death of Mr. Freeman, and
WHEREAS, the King County council has interviewed the nominees, and
WHEREAS, in satisfaction of its responsibility of joint action to fill that vacancy;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
A. Carol Gregory is one of the three nominees selected by the Washington state Democratic Central Committee for consideration to fill the vacancy created by the death of Mr. Freeman.
B. Carol Gregory is hereby appointed by the King County to the position of representative for the 30th legislative district in the Washington state House of Representatives for the period starting from date that the Pierce County council makes the same appointment and continuing until a successor is elected at the next general election, and has qualified.
C. The clerk of the King County council shall provide a copy of this motion to the clerk of the Pierce County council, the clerk of the Washington state House of
Representatives, governor of the state of Washington and the chair of the Washington state Democratic Central Committee.
