Title
A MOTION authorizing the King County executive to accept a donation of five hundred thousand dollars from the Starbucks Coffee Company for the support of King County parks and White Center Heights park volunteer improvements.
Body
WHEREAS, King County prides itself on finding partners who will work with us to increase community and park amenities to ensure parks serve to enhance communities and our regional quality of life, even during tight fiscal times, and
WHEREAS, gifts that preserve open space, provide new amenities and support specific facilities are tangible ways of making a difference now and for future generations, and
WHEREAS, under the omnibus parks Ordinance, Ordinance 14509, the King County parks and recreation division has the authority to solicit gifts from individual, foundation and corporate sources, and
WHEREAS, under K.C.C. chapter 2.80, any and all gifts for parks and recreation purposes that exceed fifty thousand dollars require acceptance on behalf of King County by the King County council by motion, and
WHEREAS, all gifts to the King County parks and recreation division are used only for parks purposes, and
WHEREAS, the Starbucks Coffee Company is pleased to have the opportunity to show its support for King County parks as the recipient of a Starbucks Parks Fund signature gift, and
WHEREAS, this generous gift will support King County parks, White Center Heights park and volunteer improvements of White Center Heights park, and
WHEREAS, the parks and recreation division business plan emphasizes generation of entrepreneurial revenues, including pursuing gifts, bequests and donations, which are budgeted in the parks and recreation division operating fund as operating revenues, and
WHEREAS, gifts in support of parks and recreation facilities and programs are to be credited to the parks trust and contribution fund before being transferred to the parks operating fund to support King County parks and the volunteer project, and
WHEREAS, the King County parks and recreation division is working with the White Center community to host a "Starbucks Ultimate Park Makeover" at White Center Heights park, a volunteer project in June 2007 with the mission of transforming a park into an important neighborhood asset with a variety of enhanced public spaces and amenities, and
WHEREAS, the Starbucks Ultimate Park Makeover volunteer improvements will leverage a Starbucks gift with volunteer and other in-kind support for maximum impact, and
WHEREAS, the Starbucks Coffee Company wishes to make a donation of five hundred thousand dollars to support King County parks and the volunteer project improvements to White Center Heights park;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT MOVED by the Council of King County:
The King County department of natural resources and parks is authorized to accept a donation of five hundred thousand dollars from the Starbucks Coffee Company for the support of King County parks and White Center Heights park volunteer project
improvements. Actions not inconsistent with this motion taken before the date of adoption are hereby ratified, approved and confirmed.
