The Chair informed the Council of the announcement made earlier in the day by the federal

The Central Link Light Rail Project has a new rating of 'highly recommended' from the FTA. The project is cost effective and ready to be built. Mr. von Reichbauer commented that even though some were opposed to the decision, we can all appreciate and respect the fact that the President of the United States has been attentive to our state. Mr. Pelz added that more good news is expected in the future and there is hope to break ground on light rail this summer. Ms. Patterson informed the Council that Sound Transit made an announcement two weeks ago that an agreement was made with the Port of Seattle regarding a way to get the light rail line to the airport. She indicated this may give those who were skeptical a reason to think positively about some of the steps Sound Transit has made this past year. Mr. Phillips commented that not only was the announcement made today noteworthy, but gave compliments to those members serving on the Sound Transit Board for their hard work in making Sound Transit the success it is today. Mr. Irons reported on the final public hearing at Tahoma High School on the draft critical areas ordinance. He indicated there was a very good turnout with quality information being distributed. The County Executive was also in attendance. Mr. Irons reported that he and Ms. Lambert attended the meeting regarding the Army Corps of Engineers 205 Flood Reduction Project. This project initially started 30 years ago. The final papers have been signed and the project will move forward next year. Ms. Lambert also commented on this subject indicating that many groups were involved. She stated that this project will reduce flood damage in the city of Snoqualmie. Mr. Phillips reported on the Cedar River Council, which is devoted to the health of the Cedar River system in South King County. The council discussed the critical areas ordinance. Mr. Phillips indicated that the council's subcommittee provided comments on the critical areas draft ordinance, in the form of a letter. The letter will be held until the next meeting, as the public comment period remains open until February 28. The council will conclude its work next month. Ms. Edmonds reported on the Disabilities Retirement Board's recent meeting. The Board discussed three policy items: the dental policy and the decision to limit dental benefits to $3,000 per year; hearing aids, and new confidentiality requirements of the health improvement partnership act. |
