Title
AN ORDINANCE requiring that prior to cremating remains of decedents who came to their death in King County the death must be reported to the King County medical examiner's office, and an authorization from the King County medical examiner received releasing the body for cremation; establishing a fee under the authority of K.C.C. 2.99.030.B. to be charged by the King County medical examiner's office for review of reports of deaths of persons whose remains are to be cremated; and adding a new section to K.C.C. chapter 2.24.

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KING COUNTY:
SECTION 1. A. Section 2 of this ordinance proposes a new fee for persons reporting a death to the medical examiner's office of a person whose remains are to be cremated.
B. The fee is imposed under RCW 70.58.230.
NEW SECTION. SECTION 2. There is hereby added to K.C.C. chapter 2.24 a new section to read as follows:
A person shall not cremate the body of a decedent who died in the county without first reporting the death to the medical examiner's office and receiving an authorization from the medical examiner releasing the body for cremation.
B.1. A person reporting a death to the medical examiner's office of a person whose remains are to be cremated shall be charged a fee of fifty dollars.
2. The medical examiner may waive the fee if the cost of the cremation to be performed was paid before the effective date of this ordinance. The fee shall not be charged if the cost of the cremation is borne by the county.
3. Revenues generated by the cremation permit fee shall be expended to support the King County medical examiner's office.
SECTION 4. Severability. If any provision of this ordinance or its application to any person or circumstance is held invalid, the remainder of the ordinance or the application of the provision to other persons or circumstances is
not affected.
