AN ORDINANCE making an honorary road name designation in recognition of Mukai Farm and Garden.

Body

STATEMENT OF FACTS:

1.  The council, by motion, may propose an honorary road name designation, consistent with K.C.C. 16.08.060.

2.  On April 6, 2021, the council passed Motion 15856, which proposed an honorary road name designation in recognition of Mukai Farm and Garden.

3.  Before World War Two, the Mukai Farm & Garden was one of the largest strawberry farms in America.

4.  The farmstead was once a hub of Japanese American social and cultural life on Vashon Island.

5.  The Mukai Agricultural Complex was designated a King County Landmark in 1993.

6.  Kuni's garden, designed by Kuni Mukai in 1932, is the first Japanese-inspired stroll garden in the United States designed by an Issei woman.

7.  Kuni's Garden received the 2020 John Spellman award for garden restoration.

8.  The Mukai Cold Process Barreling Plans played a significant role in developing innovative processing and canning practices that helped revolutionize the fruit business in the United States.

9.  The Mukai Farm & Garden symbolizes the vibrant role of Japanese Americans in Vashon's pre-World War Two agricultural economy.

10.  The Mukai Farm & Garden continues to educate and engage the people of King County about Asian American history and culture.

11.  To honor the Mukai family and the broader Japanese American immigrant community to 20th-century agriculture, business and community life on Vashon Island, the council of King County is making an honorary street designation of "Mukai Way" for 107th Avenue SW from SW Bank Rd south to terminus of the road.

12.  All requirements set forth in K.C.C. 16.08.060 regarding honorary road name designations have been met.

                     BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KING COUNTY:

                     SECTION 1.  The section of 107th Avenue SW from SW Bank Rd south to terminus of the road is given the honorary road name designation "Mukai Way" to honor the contributions of the Mukai family and the broader Japanese American immigrant community to 20th-century agriculture, business and community life on Vashon Island.

                     SECTION 2.  The department of transportation, roads services division, shall design, erect and maintain a properly engineered honorary road name sign reading as

 

described in this ordinance at the section of 107th Avenue SW from SW Bank Rd south to terminus of the road.
